We used: the Splatter effect (Effects → Brush Strokes → Splatter), the Points built-in plugin (Effects → Built-in Plugins → Points), the Layer Mask feature, the Oil Brush (Toolbar → Artistic Brushes → Oil Brush), and the Smoke Brush (Toolbar → FX Brush → Smoke Brush).
